The continuing saga of Michaela, complete with photos.

March 1, 8:30pm PDT

At the park in San Francisco the other day, Michaela went down a slide for the first time, first with Dad, then by herself. She also had her first experience in a sandbox, where she surprised us by not eating any sand. It was really fun watching her crawling as fast as she couldo go while chasing pigeons.

A few days ago, Mom woke up to the sound of crawling out in the hallway. Michaela's learned to get up of bed all by herself! She's been crawling since New Year's Eve and is very good at walking while holding on to furniture. She stands up whenever and wherever she can, but always holding on to something.

Every Wednesday, Michaela goes to "story/song time" at the library (it's great, there are tons of kids and a wonderful teacher) and she surprised Mom by showing that she knows how to say "bah bye". She's been waving for a while, but this time she actually said the words (or something like them) while she was waving. We're not sure if these are her first words. She says ma ma ma ma ma a lot, often while standing next to Mome asking to be picked up, but we're not sure if that's because she is calling "mama" or because that's what she says when she's tired. In any case, it's very sweet.

She knows her name and LOVES it when people call her by it (either Michaela or plain Mika). She comes when called (just like the cats) and, of course, often when not called but just wants her mommy or a bottle. She knows the cats well, and for some time now all you have to say is "where are the kitty cats" for her to look all around for them.

She's been taking swimming lessons for about 2 weeks now and that's been going pretty well. There are four other kids, ranging from seven months to two 1/2 years and a very nice teacher. Michaela is "learning" to float on her tummy and on her back, and we're working on having her kick with her legs while she does that. Her favorite part is when we throw her up on the air or she "jumps" from the side of the pool.

She's playing a lot at home, and she actually spends a lot of time by herself playing. One of her new favorite activities is taking books/CDs/DVDs out of the bookshelves. We don't have much of a prayer that she'll learn to put them back any time soon.

At this age, she will eat almost everything. She surprised us by having a spicy olive the other day, and she hasn't shied away from curries or even veggies. Her favorite food by all means is ice cream, all you have to do is hold the carton and she will make her way to you with her mouth open.
